Because of the growing surge of interest in photography, photography tilts have also become a hit. Photography competitions have continued to attract a big number of contestants from different cultures, age, genders and profession. Even amateur photographers have stood at par with trained and experienced photographers in photography competitions. If you want to start a photography career by winning in a photography competition, here are some guidelines that can help you, aside from buying a good camera:

Your photo should complement the theme of the competition. All photography competitions have a theme. Your photo should portray a story related to the competition’s theme. Most photography competitions choose themes from recent and pressing societal issues.

Stick to the rules of the competition. No matter how good and expressive your photos are, your entries will still be disqualified if you violate any of the rules of the competition. Important rules and guidelines you should bear in mind include file sizes, allowed editing features and submission mechanism. Following the rules of the competition may spell the difference between victory and failure.

Look at previous winners. If the competition is held annually or regularly, try to browse over previous year’s winning entries so you will know what the judges are looking for. Try to decipher the organizers’ biases. If the organizer is fighting for a specific advocacy or cause, try to make your entry in line with the organizer’s advocacy.

Go beyond the usual shots. Avoid predictable shots. Try to identify the shots contestants would most probably be making and make a shot deviant or distinct from what you think is predictable and common.

Take a shot that connects with the audience. A winning shot is a shot that moves the audience. In order to move the audience, a shot should have a certain emotional and mental connection with the audience.

The debate over mac versus PC continues to resound among photographers. A photographer’s main goal is to capture life’s best and worst moments. A photographer’s main focus is to make these moments come to life. There are numerous ways and means to make stunning photos. A photographer’s tool plays a very important role on the turnout of a photographer’s attempt. Thus, whether a photographer uses Mac or PC a spells a big difference on how the photo will turn out to be.

Mac has attracted quite a following among photographers. Numerous photographers use Mac so they can take advantage of Aperture and Mac Photoshop. Macs also seemed to be designed to cater to creative industry professionals such as photographers and videographers. With Mac, you can use Epic Cut Final Studio and Apple Cinema Displays. You can also take advantage of the wide array of templates in iLife and iWork. Indeed, Mac is perfect for graphics and multimedia. Aside from a remarkable and amazing camera, Mac is the perfect partner of every photographer.

Black and white photos elicit drama and story. Indeed, there is nothing more captivating than black & white photography to draw attention or response from the audience. The mysterious allure of the black and white shade has continued to puzzle many, especially photography enthusiasts, which have led them to continue to explore this genre of photography to understand what makes it so effective. Take an image of a child, when converted to black and white, the focus is intensified and the mood changed.

Black and white photography dominated the scene for several decades and this same trend continued on even when color photography was introduced. In fact, black and white format is not only used in the field of photography, but also in other media. It even dominated television, movies, and print for some time. The 20th century also saw a flourishing of color photography but black and white photos were not completely neglected either. Many of the black and white images that were captured during the early 20th century had been preserved until today. Without images from the past, such as these Oakland photos from a long time ago, we only have words and sketches to remind us of life from yesterday.

But what is it about black and white photos that make them artistically rich? Photography experts note a few factors: viewpoint, light source, amount of light, direction of light, quality of light, tone, texture, and lines.

Viewpoint is an important aspect in capturing black and white photos as it reflects how a picture is presented. Photographers need to think about the best angle of the shoot for maximum drama. In addition, proper lighting is vital in shooting black and white photography to help capture the details, build up shadows and contrast, and offer depth and dimension to the photo.

Black and white photos could either be an artistic masterpiece or a complete failure, depending on how well it is executed. The presence of lines, for instance, draws attention to certain points in the photo. Meanwhile, texture makes the photo seem realistic and also creates a sense of mystery with blurred out details and other similar photography tricks. The tone of the photo is responsible for setting the mood and conveys feelings to an audience upon looking at a particular photograph.

However, the term “black and white” is actually a misnomer. This monochromatic form of visual art does not only use the colors black and white, but also some shades of gray and sepia. The latter shades are used in a more subtle way, though, but it makes a huge difference in bringing an artistic flavor.

The digital technology era of photography, as well as media and the arts in general, has contributed to the nostalgic feeling that one experiences upon seeing an image from the past. Take these images on Oakland theaters from the past – It seems to take one back to a time when televisions were new inventions and black and white images were the standard, or the time when colorless newspaper prints were what people had been reading on a daily basis. Despite the passage of time, many photographers are still drawn to the use of this concept in capturing their photos. The main reason behind the use of this approach is to capture that artistic sense that colored photos just could not seem to deliver, unless otherwise the photographer is gifted with expert skills.

One of the things that defines classic film noir is the exaggerated lighting that shows up so vividly in black and white, making the scenery appear menacing and off-kilter, and the characters seem either exposed (as they’re bathed in light) or suspicious (as in, hidden in shadow). And without the element of movement, there is even more opportunity to capture the drama and dimension that only black and white film can produce. However, you can’t just aim and shoot as you would with vacation snapshots. You really need to understand how different lighting techniques can be used to achieve targeted effects. Of course, trial and error can get you where you want to go with your photography over time, but why stumble along when you can learn from those who have gone before? Black and white photography has been around since George Eastman promised that all users had to do was push the button back in 1888 (and even earlier). So there’s a lot of experience for you to learn from. Here are just a few ways that you can use light to influence your photographs.

The first tip for any new photographer interested in playing with light is to know your way around your camera. In truth, if you’re using a digital camera instead of a manual to shoot black and white, you should definitely switch it up and go for old-school in order to enjoy more control over the outcome. But if you’ve never held a manual camera, you’re going to need to learn how to use the light meter, the f-stop, and the aperture (and how manipulating these tools will change the light situation). There are books that cover this basic information, and a good starter is The Kodak Guide to 35mm Photography.

Now that you’ve got your camera situation sorted out, it’s time to learn a few techniques that the pros have been using for years. One that is great for portraiture is 3-point lighting. To accomplish this flattering and dramatic effect (which will make the subject appear to pop out from the darker background) you must place your lights in a certain way to create what was known in old Hollywood as a halo. To achieve this effect, you’ll need three lights, none of them directly facing the subject. Instead, arrange them so that one is hitting the front and one side of the face (at a 45-degree angle), a second hits directly on the other side of the face, and a third shines down from behind the subject. This will largely remove shadows from the face (creating a soft look) while bringing the subject forward from the background.

You might also want to try something altogether more dramatic by using harsh overhead lighting to create long shadows (giving your subject’s face a malicious, mask-like appearance). Or you might want to make the setting into the subject and place gobos (or stencil-like covers) over the lights to produce patterns on a background. There are literally hundreds of ways you can use light to create contrast (or reduce it), infuse drama, or convey emotion through your photography. Although a short post is not enough to cover them all, you should definitely read up on techniques and go out on your own to try the ones that interest you.

Leah Ryan writes for Adiamor Engagement Rings where you can find loose diamonds, engagement ring settings, diamond pendants, and other fine diamond jewelry.

B&W photography is a form of photography where the image produced has a single color instead of producing all the colors of the object that was clicked through the camera. Though there are no colors, the shades between absolute white and absolute black that can be called grays of different intensity create a superb impression. In fact, B&W photography, which is more of a hobby rather than norm in these times of vivid color photography, is more interesting and inspiring part of this art form. Though dubbed dreary and dull by a world that has moved on to color photography decades ago, B&W photography is still a passion for those who find it more inspiring than color photography.

Monochromatic photography was all there was until color photography came, and in a sudden move, the entire world switched over to color photography. After all, who would like to see B&W films today when every detail through color difference is clearly visible with color photography? But there still are ardent fans of B&W photography who find it more gripping and intensifying than color photography. Though B&W photography is simpler than color photography, one look t any beautiful B&W portrait is enough to tell you that it is both simple and complex at the same time. In fact, B&W photography is more subtle and mysterious than tell all color photography. It leaves something to ponder unlike color photography where everything is threadbare. B&W photography has been there since the discovery of photography, it’s only now with the advent of color photography that B&W photography has turned into a more passionate hobby for the advocates f monochromatic photography.

Monochromatic photography is not only natural; it is intriguing which cannot be said about color photography. It is all about black, white, and all the hues in between. To take a B&W photograph is very easy as all cameras today have a provision whereby anyone can choose to take a B&W photo. But it takes skills to create a memorable B&W photo as there is a lot of preparation required before, during and after taking a photo.

Black and white photography is a part of photography where a monochromatic image of the object is created with the help of a camera. Actually, throughout the history of photography B&W photography has been there; it was only when color photography took over that it moved into the background. To call B&W photography as monochromatic is actually a misnomer as there are thousands of shades of gray in between black and white. This is how photography began and was dominant until color photography took over in the middle of the 20th century. Even today, there are ardent fans of this subtle art form who believe that B&W captures the essence of the object in a more subtle and mysterious way than color photography which is bare all and leaves no room for guessing. They say that color photography is so vivid and the color details are so real that they leave no room for experimentation for the man behind the camera. In B&W photos, however, there is a timeless quality, a touch of romance which is impossible to achieve with color photography.

There are many who say that black and white photography is a waste of time and loved only by those who are retrograde. It is something that should be learned only in school labs and grow out of. But those who understand the subtleties of B&W photography know how distracting colors can be when a photographer wishes to convey something but the viewer is distracted by vivid colors. Black and white photography seems to have a soul so utterly lacking in color photography. This is why B&W photography remains a favorite with those who are in this profession as they find it easy to showcase their talent with B&W photos.

Taking a B&W photo is altogether different than shooting color photos as a photographer has to keep in mind the lighting factor to take clearer and sharper photos. It is actually contrast which is the most important factor when taking a B&W photo. With no color, it is shapes and shades that become dominant in the photo. Shadows play a great role in black and white photography.

There is some mystic appeal in B&W photographs, which is why people are still interested in them. They are timeless and have a story to tell which is not the case with color photos. Though there are not many companies selling black and white rolls, you can still take great B&W photos using your digital cameras as most of them have B&W settings. There are times when a photographer wishes to convey something about the object, but color takes away all the subtle effects. This is when a B&W photo can create wonders. Monochromatic photos make the photos look artistic. You can take these B&W photos anytime as you are not bothered by colors and their matching. Even those who love to dabble with colors find the shades of gray very interesting in B&W photos. Here are some tips to compose a great B&W photo.

Make use of RAW

Using RAW ensures a great B&W photo. You will be surprised to see the intensity of the photo taken in RAW. It allows for experimentation and you gain better control over the appearance of your photos. You can process the photos later using Adobe photoshop.

Use patterns and textures

B&W photos with patterns and textures in the background look great in the absence of colors. No colors means no distraction and one can actually appreciate these textures and patterns. If your object has patterns, taking a B&W photo is much better than taking a color photo.

Contrast is the backbone of B&W

B&W photos can give a dramatic effect if contrast is made good use of. This is why professionals suggest taking B&W photos on overcast days. When there is light in the background and the object is dark, you get enough contrast and the photo will bring to light some details even you did not notice with your eyes.

Low ISO is the key

ISO is a number that indicates the sensitivity of the image sensor. Higher the number is, higher the sensitivity. If you wish to avoid grains in your B&W photos, use the lowest possible ISO.

If you follow these tips, you can take great B&W photos.

A camera is a gadget that records and stores images. For decades, it was the box camera that ruled the roost. It was cheap and simple, yet produced very good results. These cameras had a single element lens, limited aperture control, and a leaf shutter that had single speed. Box cameras were also called viewfinder cameras.

Folding roll cameras also became popular which in essence were types of box cameras only. In these cameras, lens was contained in a movable bellows that could move forward and backward, which allowed the lens to change focus. These cameras were foldable and thus easy to take on vacations

Rangefinder cameras do not use a lens to view the object. They rather have a separate viewing system to aim and view. In these cameras there are two images in the viewfinder. One that is yellowish is only a part of the view that the person gets. These cameras are very accurate and lightweight. They are ideal for taking pictures in low light.

Twin lens reflex cameras are fitted with two lenses, one atop another. The lower lens focuses its image on the film, while taken by the upper lens is reflected at right angles using a mirror and brought to focus on a horizontal screen.

Single lens reflex cameras or the SLR does viewing and photographing with a single lens. Light going through the lens is directed through a mirror on a horizontal glass.

Instant cameras produce a finished photo within minutes. Also known as Polaroid cameras, the film after exposure is passed between two rollers which causes rupture of a chemical pod that spreads developing agent on the film and the print comes out.

Disc cameras make use of film that is rolled on a spool or loaded into a cassette. These cameras are very compact and are fitted with a flash and a motor that advances the disc after each exposure.

Point and shoots cameras are viewfinder cameras with special abilities of focus. These cameras are perfect for taking on vacations. These cameras have a wide angle lens and you can get closer to the object to take a close up.
